Tough Start

It's been a while since my last post and so many things happened that I could write a novel. Because reading is not popular these days, I'll make it short. Half-Ironman Eagleman On June 8th, I raced my first long distance triathlon of this season. We were more than 20 athletes representing Rouge et Or in Cambridge, Maryland. In Short...  A horrible swim, an ordinary bike and a catastrophic run. Transitions were good :) Comical Fact  I walked on a nail on the rented house deck two days before the race. It was obviously uncomfortable, but it didn't really have an impact on my race results. Statistics  Swim : 33:55 (73e) T1: 1:05 Bike : 2:39:33 (77e) T2: 1:11 Run : 1:37:24 (51e) 20e PRO out of 22 51e woman out of 672 272e athlete out of 2082 Half-Ironman Mont-Tremblant It was on June 22nd, which is exactly at the end of school year. As a high school maths teacher, it is by far the worst time of year at work because we are loaded with exams correctio...

Teacher full time, athlete part time… priorities have changed!

I’ve laughed about priorities during my studies. For I, a Rouge et Or student-athlete, priority number one was training. “If studies aren’t good for your training, give up studying”, is what I used to say pleasantly. In fact, I was mostly serious. How many courses have I missed because of a clue swimming session or a training camp? Working was my second priority simply because without it I couldn’t train and training was the most important thing… You get it! Finally, studying came in third on my priority list. It’s probably not where you expect students to put it. However, understand this, it may have been a little bit less important than training or work, but it was clearly more important than drinking, smoking or wasting time all day long. Today, it’s different. Priorities have changed : work first, then train. For the past two months, I’ve been teaching to four secondary high school groups. Since I’m such a beginner, I need to give 110% of myself from 8:30 to 5pm from Monday to...

Miami 70.3 Recap...finally !

Image
I thought : why not end the season in Miami Beach ?!? You know, to drink a fresh margarita, by the beach, is by far one of the best ways to celebrate the end of the triathlon season and the beginning of winter. Ah, but I still had a goal to achieve… Miami 70.3 !  BEFORE THE RACE  The race was on Sunday the 27th so I arrived on Wednesday the 23 rd to get used to South Florida heat. With a couple of friends, I rented a cozy, but small apartment on South Beach. I had to sleep on the coach. Between my friends, only Steve was also racing.   On Thursday, Steve and I went training and I got nervous about the swim. I realised we were going to swim in salty water and that I was drinking way too much of it. Actually, that must be the reason why I don’t have hydration issues during my races even though I clearly don’t hydrate as much as I should be. But that won’t work with salty water. So, I tested different breathing ways to drink less water. The d...

Disguise as a Girl

Image
It's the time of the year where all the Rouge et Or athletes are unrecognizables because they are all well dressed up. Each year, I play the game. Here is what I could manage in 15 minutes...  "Ain't nobody got time for that ".   Pamela, Francine, Élise, Martine and I Élise and I Yes, observers, Elise put on two different dresses in the same night ! *** Today, we had a 1500m swim trial long course. Result ? 20:51 Happy girl :D *** I had an illumination this week. I am going to go back home this summer to FINALLY start working in September. A long story. However, this life changing decision should not change my triathlon calendar for this summer.

It Was Worth Getting a Raccoon

I’m in Montreal, in transit between Florida and my final destination, Quebec city. By the way, what a waste of time to wait 4 hours at Montreal airport when it would have taken me half the time to get to Quebec city by car. Just saying. I have the blues I already miss the athlete’s type of life I was living in the past three weeks : sleep, eat, train, eat, watch a film, train, eat, play Beans, snack, sleep. Repeat 21 times minus two light days. Actually, I had some homework and administrative works for the triathlon club to do, but not enough to mention really. I miss to ride on dry roads, to swim outside and to wear short clothes. Short wrap up 21 days in Clermont 40h of biking, 1175km 18h of running, 230km 21h of swimming, 65km (approximately, because we often swam in yards) Best running moment  : 4x2000m on track in 7:27 with 3:30 recovery Best swimming moment  : Long course, 3 times the following set: 200m AO en 2:35/4min + 1...

First Half of our Training Camp

Image
Meeting the turtle, I was a bit nervous More than a week done and I'm feeling stronger than ever ! We were a little worried at the beginning because of the cold weather. The first days, we were going to the pool with all the warmer clothes we had brought and still couldn't get warm enough. Luckily, the NTC pool is heated... when it's not too windy. The thing is, it was too windy so they couldn't leave the pool tarp during the night. Some ended up wearing their wetsuit and we weren't taken much break between the sets. However, since friday, the hot Florida sun is back and our tan is getting better. Running at the NTC track I have to say, after our two first group bike rides, I was desperate. I was wondering how I would get through this training camp with my old and heavy bike. I should have brought my TT bike. In addition to my bike problems, I had trouble with my injuries to the right foot and to the right IT Band. Sincerely, I was asking myself why I...
